The Haifa Museums as a Learning Environment
The Haifa Museums' Education Department mediates between visitors and the museums. The Department is located in the Arts Center, which is adjacent to the Haifa Museum of Art. The Center holds ongoing exhibition tours, arts & crafts workshops and art courses. It also offers unique activities for families and for the general public - including birthday celebrations, day camps, holiday workshops and more.
The Arts Center is the beating heart that activates the educational programs at the four Haifa Museums. The guided tours are led by docents with academic degrees in related fields of knowledge, and much attention is given to creating high-quality, specialized tours for different audiences - both children and adults.
The Education Department's uniqueness lies in its provision of educational programs to four very different museums. What do these four museums have in common? What links temporary exhibitions of contemporary art and permanent exhibitions of maritime archeology? Or the minimalist aesthetic of Japanese culture and exhibitions concerned with the history of Haifa? We devote a great deal of time and effort to answering these questions. One may argue that the relationship between these museums is purely functional, but we believe otherwise.
About the Relationship between Observation
The challenge in defining a common denominator for the educational programs at all four museums has led to an approach that emphasizes analyzing and deciphering visual codes, and developing critical observation skills. The guided observation of the various exhibits provides young museum visitors with an initial experience of analyzing and synthesizing visual messages - while sharing questions, hypotheses and insights concerning the essence of a given exhibit and its relationship to surrounding exhibits.
In the age of digital media and the virtual reality it produces, as we are incessantly surrounded by the constant flicker of visual messages, museums function as oases of quiet and contemplation, while offering a direct intellectual and emotional encounter with the physical and material presence of unique exhibits.
We wish you an instructive, challenging and enjoyable visit to the Haifa Museums
