History

Haifa Museum of Art was founded in 1951 for a large-scale exhibition showcasing the works of the artist Marc Chagall. In 1977, the museum was moved to it current residence, the stone building in Wadi Nisans.  This building was established in the early 1920s and was used as an Anglican school for girls. Years later, the building was declared as a heritage preservation site.

Exhibitions

The museum opens new exhibitions three times a year. The exhibitions revolve around various interlaced topics, which draw their inspiration from the historic and geo-political locus of the museum. The exhibitions include solo exhibitions of artists from Israel and round the world, permanent and changing exhibitions of the museum’s rich collection, and group exhibition that engage in the themes and trends of contemporary culture.

The museum’s collection includes a rich and diverse range of over 7,500 works of Israeli and international artists, which reflects various movements and trends in the art world. Among the exhibited artists, you can find the works of renown leading artists such as:   Joseph Zaritsky,  Mordecai Ardon, Lea Nikel, Raffi Lavie, Moshe Gershuni, Michal Na'aman, Pinchas Cohen Gan, Tsibi Geva, Yechiel Shemi, Yitzhak Danziger, and many more. Alongside these is located the graphic cabinet, a collection of works made from special paper, which constitutes approximately a third of the museum’s collection, and includes impressive works by artists such as Marc Chagall, Honoré Daumier, Odilon Redon, Chana Orloff and André-Aimé-René Masson.

Haifa Museum of Art dedicates extensive efforts in collecting and exploring video art in Israel.  The museum holds a versatile media archive, which includes video works of leading artists from Israel and around the world, spanning from the birth of the medium in the 1960s to today. In the last decade the museum launched extensive research projects on this topic, which were carried out by Ms. Ilana Tenenbaum, the Digital Media Curator.  These research projects led to exhibitions and special publications, which documented, for the first time, the history of video in Israel.

As part of the museum’s aspiration to make art accessible to the general public, the education department in the museums makes use of the family friendly interactive exhibitions to turn the encounter with art into a fascinating multi-sensory experience.

The museum’s event department organizes and produces lectures, special seminar days, shows, performances, concerts, and art films, some of which in relation to the changing exhibitions.

We invite you to walk into our museum and experience an entire world of contemporary Israeli and international art.
