Lives and works in Tel Aviv

In Ayelet Carmi's works, the art world becomes yet another mythological layer equipped with its own deciphering code, alongside other mythological contexts. Reality is not fully revealed, but rather concealed by theatrical gestures appearing within the boundaries of "the black surface" – gestures that take the form of chains and circles of different shapes. In the series "Alexantropy" Carmi creates a kind of virtual island populated by warrior heroines – women placed in abstract realms, appearing as variously shaped black surfaces. Carmi's painting platform, the black surface that absorbs light, speaks of the reduction of dimensions to the zero point and a withdrawal into the work. This platform recalls the black surfaces of prominent artists such as Malevich, Rauschenberg, Klein, Rothko, and Motherwell.
