Lives and works in Tel Aviv

Guy Yanai's world seems like a mysterious kingdom containing clean, peaceful shapes, lacking any hint of social existence. In this world things live for everlasting moments, within spaces that have no place. Everything is organized in a standard structure of horizontal "lines," created using mechanical brushstrokes, with a slight accumulation of paint above and beneath each layer. Despite the gay palette, his paintings arouse a static sense of foreboding. The elusive moments that Yanai captures are magnificent yet imprisoned and frozen forever, alive and dead at the same time. Places and objects in his world are always preferable to the human. His work is characterized by constant tension between human and non-human, culture and nature, permanence and transience, materiality and the immaterial.
