Art and Playing

In this exhibition we invite you to observe, play, get excited, imagine, create, remember and think about the essence of playing as a basic, exalting human experience.

Our civilization is based on playing. Our very humanity has been shaped by interactions that take place when we play: order and spontaneity, experience of the self and cooperation with others, earnestness and facetiousness, self-control and liberation. Playing is free and without a defined aim, and thus can be considered a spiritual activity.

When we play, we feel, we sense, we project, we process, we work, we think and we symbolize. We can play act as other characters, and be imaginative. Playing is a spontaneous and creative process where thoughts, feelings and actions can thrive without fear of failure or destructive results in the “real” world.

The exhibition features contemporary works of art in various media - illustrations, drawings, paintings, photography, design, sculpture and video, some created specifically for this exhibition. These works underscore the playing body's place, and its sensory, emotional and symbolic place in our lives: starting with the sensory play of infants and toddlers who experience the world with their entire body, through playing with dolls and small figurines that have a symbolic-representative value for children, and eventually with the playing body acting within the rules of adult social games. The artists explore questions of identity as well as social, political, and ecological issues through actions and images.

The exhibition seeks to point out the affinity between playing and art. As in art, during playing internal worlds and external reality can converge. Playing, just like art, constitutes a safe and secure space where one can relax and dream, build and destroy, create worlds, process reality, reflect and regain control.

During your visit we invite you to ask yourself: what was your favorite game when as a child? What is your favorite game now? What forms of playing do the exhibits deal with? What is the difference, if there is any, between male and female artists in their approach to playing? Do the works relate to the artists’ own playing experiences when they were children? Or perhaps they relate to observations of their own children? Does playing, in the exhibited works, symbolize something else, external? And if yes, what? How does art differ from playing?
