Thomas Israël creates interactive works, video installations, sculptures, and performance. Having begun his career in theater, his atypical approach to digital arts revolves around the themes of the body, time, and the subconscious. Based on the notion of temporality, his works invite viewers to participate in the artistic experience and explore the concept of the self-image in processes of performance, disappearance, and composition.
In the interactive installation Peeping Tom, an array of eyes stalk the viewer, raising the issue of institutional and personal voyeurism. The artist explains: "The person who triggers these images is confronted with their own voyeurism and perversion. I subject him to what he subjects others… There is a real disturbance in being spied upon in this way by a huge eye. We are living in an age of widespread voyeurism... With Facebook, for example, voyeurism has become a new norm.”
