The chronicles of abstract Israeli art are interspersed with the names of male artists who were dominant in the artists' associations and art schools. Some of them also excluded women artists from their ranks, whether by narrowing their steps or by ignoring them altogether. To this day, exhibitions of abstract art in Israel mostly focus on the same male artists. The collection of Haifa Museum of Art, on the other hand, contains an exceptional number of abstract works by women, extraordinary in terms of their artistic quality. This concentration is greatly indebted to the collectorship of Gabriel Tadmor, director of Haifa Museum of Modern Art between 1964 and 1989, who enriched the collection with their works, and dedicated solo exhibitions to these artists—Hannah Levi (1964), Lea Nikel (1966), Pnina Hazan (1968), Batia Grossbard (1973), and others. These artists, who addressed neither "feminine" subjects nor gender, led the abstract inclination in Israel to one of its peaks. The current exhibition dedicates to their art a room of its own.
